The latest State of Play might’ve had some big announcements, but there were a few indie games that really stuck out.
Sword of the Sea
From the artist behind Journey, ABZÛ, and The Pathless, Sword of the Sea looks like it’s carrying that same emotional weight and visual beauty. It’s an atmospheric surfing adventure where you move across vast landscapes using a Hoversword — inspired by skateboarding and snowboarding.
Releasing August 19th on PS5, Steam, and Epic Games Store.
I think this game looks incredibly unique and it seems like it’s going to be a visual masterpiece. Definitely one I want to experience firsthand.
Romeo Is A Deadman
This one came out of nowhere — and it’s absolutely wild. Romeo Is A Deadman is the latest from Grasshopper Manufacture, and it looks like a violent, unpredictable fever dream (in a good way). It’s giving off big Dead Rising energy, but even more off-the-rails.
Releasing on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 in 2026.
All I can say is… WTF. This game looks crazy — in the most fun, chaotic way. I’m definitely excited to see where this goes.
Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement
Set years before Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, this new entry follows Leo and the Black Wolves as they take on a cursed castle and face off against horrific beasts and a powerful demon lord. It’s got cinematic storytelling, intense boss fights, and a really strong atmosphere.
Releasing on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 in 2026.
Admittedly, I haven’t played any of the previous Bloodstained games — but this one looks intriguing enough that I might finally give the series a shot.
That’s it for now, but these indie games definitely left a mark. Whether it's the serene beauty of Sword of the Sea, the chaos of Romeo Is A Deadman, or the gothic edge of Bloodstained, this State of Play had something a little unexpected, and I’m here for it.
