Sony has been hard at work, bringing exciting new technologies in different fields. This has been quite true for gaming as well, as there have been no shortage of news, leaks and rumors about the Playstation 5. As time passes, people are more desperate for a release date or a peek at what the newest iteration of the Playstation family will look like.
Today, at the 53rd Consumer Electronics Show, Sony came in with an ominous slogan: “The future is coming.” Sony’s President and CEO, Kenichiro Yoshida, certainly did not doubt its validity as he came on stage.
Yoshida began his speech with a showcase of the company’s latest TV technology, boasting resolutions up to Ultra-High Definition 8K as well as their 360° reality audio, which is already available for many audio devices out today.
Soon after, the stage would be given to Sony Interactive Entertainment’s President & CEO, Jim Ryan. Ryan started his speech with a small celebration of the Playstation’s 25th anniversary, and how the brand brought video games into the mainstream culture and popularized 3D graphics on home consoles. He spoke with pride of how the company never stops trying to bring features into their platforms, to always stay ahead.
Ryan showed that Playstation 4 sales have been quite satisfactory, with PS4 selling 106 million units, putting it second only to the PS2 in sales.
As for the PS5, Ryan announced that it would be releasing “This holiday.” However, there was no hardware reveal; which begs the question of whether they plan on showing off their hardware at E3. It would be a bold move, considering it would only allow a few months to create hype for the platform after its showcase.
Some of the announced key features of the PS5 are nothing that hasn’t been said before, and with no mention of backward compatibility for PS3, PS2, and PS1 software, it leaves little room for speculation.
While it appears that 2020 will be a promising year for Sony and Playstation fans alike. There was little in this conference regarding Sony’s next platform, or any other news regarding Playstation. For now, we have new PS4 exclusives such as The Last of Us 2, Ghost of Tsushima and Final Fantasy VII: Remake coming out this year, to keep us busy while we wait for Sony’s new hardware.
