Everybody loves to watch a speedrunning world record get taken down right in front of them, given they themselves aren’t skilled enough to do it, but some are even willing to pay money for it. This isn’t the first, nor will it be the last, time a bounty has been placed in order to motivate runners of a specific game to beat a specific run. People hold these bounties for a few reasons, but the main one is to see a record thought to be unbeatable get broken once more. This time, the game was the most heavily run title, Super Mario 64, and the bounty was for $12,500 if the player could get a record of 1:58:59 or lower in the 120-star category.
During the first-of-its-kind speedrunning race event simply called Break The Record. This event added pressure on the players and had a low chance of actually catching a player to break this world record seeing how players have been trying to beat it for 10’s of thousands of hours already. However, in what proved to be one of the most clutch runs to date, record holder and popular Super Mario 64 speedrunner Cheese managed to pull it off!
