I am loving Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. I got it for Christmas in 2018 and it is probably the most-played game on my Nintendo Switch. However, there’s one thing that bothers me. Why is Fire Emblem the second most represented game franchise in SSBU after Pokemon? If you’re not a hardcore Nintendo fan, there’s a good chance you don’t know any of the characters outside of other Smash Bros. games. However, there are seven characters from Fire Emblem. For perspective, there are five characters from the Mario franchise: Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Peach, and Daisy. In fact, I’ll even give it the benefit of the doubt and throw Dr. Mario in the mix to give them six characters. In fact, the number of Fire Emblem characters have even spawned a meme.
Also, it’s become a joke over on Twitter thanks to Alex Hirsch:
In their defense, some of the Jarths as I will now call them do tend to have different movesets. Also, this is not to say that Fire Emblem is bad. I quite enjoy the one Fire Emblem game I’ve played. However, I’d rather see more characters from more popular franchises for casual Nintendo fans. For example, where the heck is Funky Kong or Dixie Kong? Where the heck is Impa? What about Spring Man and Ribbon Girl from Arms? There are plenty of other characters that could’ve been introduced instead of more Jarths or maybe in addition to (although that would make the roster even larger and possibly too big).
I know I’m not the only one who thinks this either as I just found this article from Kotaku talking about the exact same thing. So, who would you rather see in Smash than another Jarth?
