The Biggest Surprise of SGF 2026? Star Wars: Galactic Racer

Now that embargo has finally lifted, we can tell you what we've been dying to say: the biggest surprise of SGF 2026 wasn't one of the blockbuster RPGs or the long-awaited franchise revivals, it was Star Wars: Galactic Racer, and it wasn't even close. Look, Star Wars has left me a bit cold as of late. It's been hard to muster the same excitement I once had for the galaxy far, far away. But getting hands on with Galactic Racer at Play Days was like being wrapped in a warm, comfy blanket, one sewn together with gorgeous visuals, blistering speed, and a level of polish that honestly caught us completely off guard.

It’s that good, and then some.

Developed by some incredibly talented devs that definitely know how to convey speed, danger, and excitement, Galactic Racer feels exactly like what you'd hope for from that pedigree. The speed is relentless, the vehicles each handle in completely distinct ways, and the racing itself has this addictive, high-stakes energy that keeps you leaning forward in your seat. What really floored us, though, was the campaign.

Rather than a simple tournament ladder, the game uses a runs-based structure that layers in consequential decision-making between races, think vehicle upgrades, character interactions, and a genuinely compelling story following a racer named Shade through the lawless circuits of a huge universe. We did not see that coming, and it elevates the whole package in a big way.

Set in the an exciting era of the Star Wars universe, and yes, with Sebulba along for the ride, this is the first Star Wars racing game in over two decades, and it arrives October 6th. The demo alone was enough to put it firmly on our radar, and the team behind it is clearly passionate about getting it right.

If this one delivers on what was shown at SGF, Galactic Racer won't just be a great racing game, it'll be one of the best Star Wars games in years. We cannot wait.
