With Legendary Pictures putting a bunch of money and support behind Duncan Jones for Warcraft, it is no surprise that other game companies are starting to jump behind video game movies again. Though they have been the laughing stock of the box office the last couple decades, we very well could be poised on the edge of a video game movie revolution.
Blizzard has Warcraft, Ubisoft has Assassin's Creed with Michael Fassbender, now CD Projekt Red will have an adaptation of their wildly decorated Witcher series. Based on the games and books by writer Andrzej Sapkowski, the films will be produced by the team behind The Mummy series. Brought on to direct is Academy Award nominated animation director Tomasz Baginski (The Cathedral, 2002), along with veteran television writer Thania St. John (Chicago Fire, Buffy the Vampire Slayer).
While based on the previous stories of The Witcher series, as well as following lead character Geralt of Rivia, the films will not actually follow any previously told plots. This is an issue that somewhat worries me. What has driven video game movies in the crappy direction they went is the lack of care for the source material. Hopefully by telling new stories in this world we will be seeing a film that is loyal to the lore, even if it's not actually a story we're familiar with. I suppose this early on, only time will tell. In the meantime, at least the Warcraft trailer comes out today!
