I just spent a few hot and very humid but extremely fun days bouncing between Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and Epic Universe, and I came home with an opinion I didn't expect to hold this strongly: Universal is running circles around the competition right now. Not in a close-race kind of way. In a "the gap is getting embarrassing" kind of way. And yes, I mean the other place down the road. The one everyone defaults to. Well, the winds of change are a blowin’.
Universal has quietly spent the last several years building the better operation, and the difference is obvious the moment you walk through a gate. Start with the basics, because the basics are where you feel it first. The food is better. Not theme-park-good, actually good, the kind of meals you'd order again outside the park. The grounds are cleaner. Staff seem like they want to be there. Attraction quality holds up across all three parks rather than clustering around two headliners with filler stretched between them. These are unglamorous things that nobody puts in a commercial, and they're exactly what makes a long day with a family tolerable instead of exhausting.
Epic Universe is the headline, and it earns it. What makes it work is that each land feels like a genuinely different place rather than variations on a theme. So what makes all this so special? Well, here are just a few small examples in Epic alone.
Super Mario land is bright and chaotic and nails the feeling of walking into the games. The Monsters area goes properly gothic and leans into atmosphere. How to Train Your Dragon is warmer and more open than I expected. I just love them all! There really is something for everyone from charming to terrifying and that’s no joke. The Harry Potter section holds its own against the older ones, which is no small feat given how beloved those are. Four lands, four completely different moods, all executed at a level that suggests nobody was cutting corners. The scope and scale is absolutely stunning.
Then there are the rides. Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure remains, for my money, the best theme park attraction ever built. I've ridden it more times than is reasonable and it still gets me every single time. But Hiccup's Wing Gliders at Epic Universe has muscled its way onto that same shortlist, which I genuinely did not see coming. It's thrilling without being punishing, beautiful to look at, and it sticks with you afterward. Having two rides of that caliber in the same resort is absurd. Universal is doing it right, and if you haven't been recently, you're missing what's currently the best theme park destination in the country.
In the end, it all just made me… smile.
