It seems that we’re getting a new Star Wars game after Ubisoft revealed its spin on the famous intellectual property with Star Wars: Outlaws, developed by Massive Entertainment. The game was showcased at Ubisoft Forward and is touted as the first open-world Star Wars game ever.
The story is original and takes place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The empire is preoccupied with crushing the rebellion effort, which means their focus has lessened on criminals and thieves. Kay Vess, the player character, and her companion Nix, along with the rest of the criminal world, are taking advantage of the empire being distracted by the rebel threat. Kay and Nix will strive to commit the ultimate heist and set themselves up for life.
Judging from the trailer, it looks like the game is taking a similar route as Jedi: Survivor when it comes to gameplay and visuals although without the force abilities. The focus on traditional blaster combat and espionage should be enough to differentiate the two but hopefully, this doesn’t mean further Star Wars games will stick to one uniform genre. It seems the upcoming Star Wars: Eclipse will prevent this problem, however.
Star Wars: Outlaws is planned to be released sometime in 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Ubisoft Connect.
