Since the start of 2023, Amazon Games has been announcing collaborations with multiple studios to make some big games happen. So far, they have announced an upcoming Tomb Raider game, a new anime-style game called Blue Protocol, an MMORPG called Throne & Liberty, along with some untitled games. Now, they are back to reveal that they have struck a collaboration with Middle-earth Enterprises to develop an MMORPG featuring The Lord of the Rings!
The game is being developed by the same studio that created their popular MMO New World and it will feature the iconic stories found in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings literary trilogy. The prospect of building a vast, connected digital world for the preeminent fantasy franchise on the planet is a tremendously exciting one for Rich Lawrence, director of the Amazon Games Orange County studio, and certainly a responsibility that he and his team do not take lightly.
“The number-one thing about a property like this is that you have to be respectful and authentic,” Lawrence said. “When somebody is a fan of The Lord of the Rings and sits down and plays this game for the first time, they have to say, ‘This was crafted by a bunch of people who lived in this world just like I do in my head. They get it.”
The Lord of the Rings MMORPG doesn’t have a release window yet, but more news is sure to come out as the game continues its development. For now, you can find more details on the official Amazon Games blog.
