Gameplay and Story
Arizona Sunshine 2 follows a distressed man looking to find human contact of any kind. In a lone wolf journey of survival he has done all he can to stay sane including calling zombies Fred to give himself a little more of a human connection. On this lonely search for patient zero, you come across a scared dog that you name buddy and he is exactly that your buddy, treat the good boy well.
After a fallen helicopter near your home base you catch word of a vaccine that can be created by finding patient zero. When you’re made aware of patient zero’s location you know that this is your one way towards human contact, no Fred is going to stop you from getting that.
In Arizona Sunshine 2 you play through your classic zombie survival game. Gathering supplies to craft weapons. Scavenging for new weapons and ammo. Trying to stay quiet when you can so you don’t alert the horde. It’s done really well too, especially for a VR game. The gunplay in this title is surprisingly satisfying, it makes you feel like a star in an action movie. Even the two handed guns are fun to use (which I can’t say about other shooters).
Besides the campaign mode which is a ton of fun there is a horde mode. Which was available in the first Arizona Sunshine, but something about this version just hit different. It was so much fun, I could play it for hours on end (if the Quest’s battery life would let me). In the early rounds when you’re getting settled and figuring out entry points it’s pretty easy, but when you start getting into the higher rounds where there’s a ton of zombies coming at you fast you feel like John Wick.
Graphics and Sound
I feel like a broken record sometimes but for a VR game the graphics are fine. They’re fun, sort of cartoony, and nothing super realistic, but it’s immersive enough. Where I find this game really charming, again I’m a broken record, is in the voice acting and the writing. This game is actually pretty hilarious. There’s a lot of little quips that somebody who would be lonely would make and it’s just really funny.
Feedback
Honestly, this game is pretty solid. It’s got it’s moments where it’s a little buggy but not too many complaints. With horde mode I think there’s plenty of content as long as they add more maps. Maybe another game mode eventually. I think the most immidiate area where it could improve is more guns, or an armory where you can customize guns.
A game mode that could be fun in combo with that is a sandbox mode. Spawn zombies at your leisure and goof around. Maybe a dog park for your buddy.
Verdict
Arizona Sunshine 2 is a wonderful return to the series. I had tons of fun with the horde mode and the campaign is also really fun too. I always recommend playing a predecesor in a series and I’m sure you’ll have fun with the first one too but this game is a must have especially for first time VR users.
