As expected, Death Stranding was one of the big games that debuted a gameplay trailer during Sony’s E3 2018 press conference today. Unfortunately, Hideo Kojima himself was not present at the even to take us through it. However, the game’s team didn’t come empty handed as they showed the first gameplay trailer for Death Stranding at E3, which is posted above.
The preview started with the game’s protagonist Sam Bridges played by Norman Reedus in a jungle-like environment. He is seen struggling to survive as he carries a life-pack containing a baby encased in an artificial womb. The gameplay trailer also showed Bridges in a variety of environments such as rivers, mountains, and forests. The trailer continued on as we see Bridges encounter a woman who helps him avoid detection by the invisible floating monsters. The trailer ended when Sam Bridges and the baby attempted to walk past the floating monsters.
Even though Kojima was absent at the gameplay reveal event, he wrote a blog post sharing a few insights on the trailer to give players some more context on what was shown at the conference.
“Some might have already picked up on this, but Sam is unlike any other hero you may have seen in games before. A typical hero is usually some sort of elite or someone with a military background. Sam is not. He is a working man of sorts - a hands-on professional. Someone with a skillset akin to a blue-collar worker. This is something you’ll intuitively understand once you play the game and control Sam. Herein lies our challenge, to create both a new form of gameplay and a hero that has never been done before.”
Kojima also revealed two new character posters of both Lea Seydoux and Norman Reedus’ characters.
