Every year, speedrunners are putting in the work and breaking records that push the limits of the speedrunning community to a new level. Getting the standard skill level of a game to reach a new height is standard practice as the years go on and the range between the times a real speedrunner can pull off versus the optimal, and likely inhumanly possible, time that a TAS (tool-assisted speedrun) can pull off gets closer together.
Looking back on 2021 with our host, YouTuber Karl Jobst, we can check out his top 5 speedrunning moments of this past year. As one of the more profound and well-spoken speedrun community content creators, Jobst’s channel is often getting new videos with an in-depth coverage over phenomenal feats made on a variety of titles. This is why he is one of the few speedrunning channels I follow and always find myself able to agree with, or simply enjoy, his coverage.
Boasting aside, seeing Super Mario 64 reaching a new minute mark after the somewhat emotional achievement made by Cheese05 in 2020 with his clutch moment during the live Break-the-Record event is a bit surreal. But it’s his number 1 speedrunning moment that I definitely found the most interesting. As a player that runs into annoying glitches all of the time, seeing a useful one get found and utilized for the classic Metal Gear Solid title is pretty amazing!
