The Silent Hill series has tackled horror in a few different ways. Sometimes it has to do with the town itself and the darker machinations at play, sometimes it’s about the personal hell that people go through with trauma, and sometimes it all feels like an excuse to show some disturbing body horror monsters.
No matter what the theme or story is for a particular entry, you can bet that there will be some uncomfortably disgusting creatures waiting for you. Here’s my list of the absolute creepiest enemies across the entire Silent Hill series.
5. Incubus (Silent Hill)
Most of the monsters in this series feature uncomfortable body horror designs, symbolize traumas, or both. That isn't uncommon for a horror series, but it's specifically what this one is known for. This is what makes the true final boss of the original Silent Hill such a notable monster.
Although worshipped as a God, Incubus is more of an incomplete devil sporting a goat head, wings, and a sunken-in abdomen that's basically just a spine. The red lightning attacks and ear-splitting music only raise the tension. When so many enemies in this game have story reasons for their design, a true otherworldly figure is horrifying.
4. Ayakakashi (Silent Hill F)
The visuals of a monster aren't the only aspect that can make them unpleasant. Sometimes it's their general gameplay behavior that helps make them a memorable enemy, even if they're seldom encountered.
Silent Hill F's Ayakakashi are a fantastic example of this. These scarecrow-like monsters dressed like Hinako's schoolmates are unnerving enough, but their Weeping Angel-like behavior of moving and attacking while nobody's looking turns their encounters into a scary puzzle.
3. Slurpers (Silent Hill 3)
Silent Hill 3 has a lot of disgusting monsters that Heather Mason has to fight off. While a few feel more deadly and dangerous than anything else, there is still a selection of downright creepy enemies to face off with.
My pick for that game's creepiest has to go to Slurpers. I mean, they already have a leg up with that name. Although they're a common enemy, the appearance of a crawling man with an anteater-like head and a mouth at the end is disturbing. Their tendencies to play dead and knock you down only lengthen the time you have to spend dealing with them.
2. Lisa (PT)
Although Silent Hills never came to be and the original playable teaser (P.T.) was scrubbed from online stores, there was no way we couldn't include it on this list. It was still associated with the cancelled planned entry to the series and both the ideas and sole antagonistic force from it became pretty iconic.
P.T. had plenty of uncomfortable moments as you looped through its claustrophobic hallways, but nothing as frightening as Lisa. If a tall, smiling ghost of a murdered woman stalking you through a looping hallway wasn't scary enough, her violent shaking and jump scare appearance certainly are.
1. Abstract Daddy (Silent Hill 2)
Silent Hill 2 is still arguably the biggest game in the series, and the symbolic monsters help a lot in that regard. Red Pyramid Thing/Pyramid Head and the Bubble Head Nurses are certainly iconic, but there is a far more creepy enemy that stands out.
I'm naturally talking about Abstract Daddy. A monster resembling two people in an intimate encounter on a bed is naturally uncomfortable. It symbolizing a character’s sexual trauma, further reinforced by fleshy walls with pistons, turns that unease to 11. It's not the scariest, but it's the creepiest for sure.
Then again, one of the benefits of such a long-running series is that even the lesser-received entries have some great monster designs to creep you out.
