Marvel’s Avengers was a controversial video game right from the start, and it never really shook that reputation even as it continued to churn out new content. A live-service Marvel game from the developers of the Tomb Raider reboot was an odd pitch, and its Cinderella story is, at last, coming to an end later this year.
Crystal Dynamics announced earlier this week that they will be making one last update to the game on March 31st. This update will include a variety of changes, mostly dealing with balances to the game’s systems and economy to prepare for a final end for live support of the game on September 30th.
All premium credits will be deprecated and converted into earnable resources to provide players with a boost after the update goes live. In a slightly bittersweet move, all cosmetics will be available for free starting on March 31st, including a variety of MCU and comic-inspired outfits for each of the heroes.
In an FAQ list underneath the main announcement, the Marvel’s Avengers team included a few additional bits of information about the game’s final months of support. The game will still be playable after September 30th, both in single-player and online multiplayer.
After September 30th though, the game will no longer be purchasable from digital storefronts and there will be support should a save file get corrupted. Finally, Spider-Man will forever remain a PlayStation-exclusive character, a relic of a bygone era of gaming.
Crystal Dynamics was purchased last year by the Embracer Group, separating the developer from its former publisher, Square Enix. Square initially held the Marvel license to make Marvel’s Avengers, so it’s possible this shift has something to do with the termination of service.
Crystal Dynamics is keeping busy though; they’re working with Amazon publishing to make the next installment in the Tomb Raider franchise. And Marvel isn’t resting on their laurels either, with Marvel’s Midnight Suns beginning its Season Pass rollout this month and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 slated for a Fall 2023 release.
