Square Enix and Luminous Productions brought out a new trailer for their upcoming game, Forspoken, at the PlayStation Showcase 2021 earlier this week. The trailer introduces Frey, Forspoken’s protagonist, and the circumstances that lead her to the world of Athia.
Living a less-than-desirable life in New York City, Frey wants nothing more than to get out and go somewhere better. Before she knows it she’s whisked through a magical portal and into the land of Athia, a mystical place filled with magic, monsters, and a group of dictatorial matriarchs known as the Tantas.
But Frey has abilities now, too, like elemental manipulation, telekinesis, and even flight. The trailer shows off a variety of different powers Frey has at her disposal and some of the ways they can be used together to create some interesting new effects. The trailer ends on a confrontation with the most powerful of the Tantas, Tanta Sila, played by Star Wars: Battlefront II’s Janina Gavankar.
A post on the PlayStation blog from Raio Mitsuno, Creative Producer at Luminous Productions, offered more details about the game, including a brief cast list that includes Keala Settle of The Greatest Showman fame. The post also reveals that the soundtrack for the game is being composed by Bear McCreary and Garry Schyman who composed God of War (2018) and the original Bioshock, respectively.
The post closes by revealing the core writing team for Forspoken, which includes “Gary Whitta (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Amy Hennig (Uncharted series), Allison Rymer, and Todd Stashwick.” Initially revealed last year as Project Athia, Forspoken’s official title was announced earlier this year at the Spring 2021 Square Enix Presents. Forspoken will release on the PlayStation 5 and for Microsoft Windows in Spring 2022.
