Previously a well-received entry to the DreadXP game jam, VHS horror Amanda The Adventurer has been officially picked up for a full release, published by DreadXP.
Developed by MANGLEDmaw Games, Amanda The Adventurer takes the already frightening world of early CGI kids' shows and throws in some supernatural horror for good measure.
The player takes the role of Riley Park, who, on inheriting a relative's house, finds a box of unidentified VHS tapes in the attic. Watching one reveals what appears to be a children's show, reminiscent of a certain explorer, where the viewer is prompted to interact with the screen. Strangely though, the characters on screen seem to react right back. More concerningly, Amanda herself doesn't appear to have entirely good intentions.
The full version promises to extend upon the demo, with the player making use of clues on the tapes to try and escape their situation. While they might use the tapes, the tapes can influence the real world right back. Amanda does not seem eager to let anyone get away.
Full release of the game is planned for 2023. It's available to wishlist for PC via Steam. The original demo version can be played for free via the developer's itch.io page.
