Focus Entertainment and DONTNOD revealed a gameplay trailer for their new supernatural role-playing game (RPG) Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden at Summer Game Fest. The game has a spooky undertone and deals with the themes of fate and death. This all surrounds the main gameplay which is to take on supernatural horrors to avoid a terrible fate.
The two player characters, Antea Duarte and Red mac Raith, are Banishers. Banishers are this game’s version of ghost hunters who dedicate their lives to ridding the world of evil entities. These two characters are also lovers, which spells conflict for the story and how each character will deal with the other being in danger. After Antea becomes a spirit, she and Red must journey to save her. Antea’s new state also adds an interesting dynamic to the gameplay.
Antea fights with her new magical spirit abilities while Red must rely on his arsenal. This creates a reason for both characters to exist outside of the narrative. Combat will take place mostly in the grim yet picturesque setting of North America, specifically in New Eden which is inspired by colonial times. The choices players make along the way will affect the lives of New Eden’s inhabitants so careful decision-making is a must.
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is planned for a late 2023 release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Pre-orders are available for both the standard and collector’s editions. Those who go for the Collector’s Edition will also get a separable statuette of Red and Antea, the game’s official artbook, a Steelbook, two Banishers signet rings, and the game on the platform of your choice (physical copies for consoles, digital copy for PC) with the “Wanderer Set” in-game DLC.
