Disney Lorcana is officially entering its “100% Organic Panic” era with Attack of the Vine!, the game’s thirteenth set and the culmination of a storyline that has been growing throughout the past year.
Along with finally bringing the Vine’s invasion to a head, the set introduces several new takes on Shift, more dual-named characters, leafy Vineling versions of familiar glimmers, and the Disney Lorcana debuts of Monsters, Inc., Up, and Turning Red. There’s quite a bit sprouting throughout this set, so let’s dig into everything you need to know about Disney Lorcana: Attack of the Vine!
What Is Attack of the Vine?
Attack of the Vine! is the thirteenth main Disney Lorcana set and the culmination of the game’s year-long Vine storyline.
We first saw whispers of this threat in Whispers in the Well, but our first real introduction to the Vine came in Winterspell. Elsa managed to freeze it, which proved to be a good temporary fix, but apparently nobody remembered that plants tend to come back once winter is over.
In Wilds Unknown, the Vine thawed and began spreading across the realm. It absorbed the magical ink left behind by the earlier flood, allowing it to grow stronger and create its own defenses. Now, the Vine has reached its full, massive size and begun trapping glimmers before replicating them as leafy Vinelings.
These Vinelings include corrupted versions of familiar characters such as Ursula, Gaston, and Pete. Regardless of whether the original glimmer was a hero or villain, its Vineling counterpart exists to protect the Vine.
Stopping something this large will require plenty of teamwork, and that theme carries directly into the set’s new cards and mechanics. Ravensburger describes the set as the climax of a year-long storyline, although the fight will continue in the cooperative Illumineer’s Quest: The Great Hunny Rescue.
New Mechanics in Attack of the Vine
The main gameplay theme in Attack of the Vine! is teamwork. The set features more dual-named characters than ever before and introduces the Team classification to support them.
Dual-named cards count as three different names for gameplay purposes. For example, Sulley & Boo – Scare Buddies counts as Sulley, Boo, and Sulley & Boo. However, it is still treated as a single character while in play.
The set also introduces four new variations of the Shift mechanic:
Duo Shift
Duo Shift lets you place a dual-named character on top of two separate characters—one matching each name.
For example, Mickey Mouse & Minnie Mouse – Adventuring Duo can use Duo Shift by being placed on top of both a Mickey Mouse and a Minnie Mouse. Because you’re investing three cards into one stack, these characters can provide some massive effects and heavily reward decks built around specific pairs.
Combo Shift
Combo Shift gives players a little more flexibility. A character with Combo Shift can be played on top of one character matching either of its names or on top of two characters, with one matching each name.
Dash Parr & Violet Parr – Super Siblings, for example, can shift onto Dash, Violet, or both of them together. Using two characters can also increase the value of abilities that care about how many cards are underneath the shifted character.
Temporary Shift
Temporary Shift allows a character to Shift onto another version of itself for a reduced cost, but that character returns to your hand at the end of the turn. Any damage on the stack is also removed.
Meilin Lee – Popular Red Panda uses Temporary Shift, giving her the opportunity to jump into play, immediately benefit from her Shifted status, and then return to your hand for later use. The mechanic fits Turning Red particularly well and could lead to some interesting repeatable combinations.
Potato Shift
Yes, Potato Shift is a real mechanic.
Posey – Vampire Potato can Shift on top of an item named Potato, marking the first time a Lorcana character has been able to Shift onto something other than another character. It is an extremely specific and wonderfully goofy addition, but I always appreciate when Lorcana’s designers are willing to have a little fun with the game’s mechanics.
Beyond the new Shift options, Attack of the Vine! adds the Team, Red Panda, Boss, and Vineling classifications. Christopher Robin – Hunny Sage also introduces a unique deck-building ability that lets an Amethyst/Sapphire deck include Hunny characters regardless of their ink type. The official set release notes provide a full breakdown of the new rules and card interactions.
What Is Available in Attack of the Vine?
Unlike most major Lorcana expansions, Attack of the Vine! does not include traditional Starter Decks. Instead, the product lineup focuses on booster products, the Illumineer’s Trove, and the return of dedicated Prerelease Boxes.
Booster packs contain 12 randomized cards and can be purchased individually or through a 24-pack Booster Display Box. These remain the main way to collect the set and find its new Legendary, Enchanted, and Iconic cards.
The Attack of the Vine! Illumineer’s Trove includes eight booster packs, six damage-counter dice, a spin-dial lore counter, card dividers, and a storage box. It is a solid option for players who want to open a decent number of packs while picking up some useful gameplay accessories.
Prerelease Boxes are also returning for local game store events. Each box includes:
Six Attack of the Vine! booster packs
Four damage dice
One randomized promo card
One exclusive poster
One paper deck box
Pack Rush rules
The exclusive posters lean into the set’s cinematic presentation with artwork inspired by vintage B-movie posters. That same visual direction appears on the Enchanted cards, while the set’s two Iconic cards—Lilo & Stitch – Fun-Loving Friends and Belle & Beast – Certain as the Sun—feature movie-poster-style artwork and additional foil treatments.
Promo Cards for Attack of the Vine
There are several ways to pick up promotional cards during the Attack of the Vine! season.
Each Prerelease Box contains one of six possible gold-foil promo cards, with one representing each ink color. The featured characters are Pocahontas, Buzz Lightyear, Boo, Maximus, Merlin, and Vixey.
Weekly Play events will offer three additional promotional cards:
Morph – Little Imitator
Randall Boggs – Scary Smart
Meilin Lee – Lead Vocalist
Players can also compete in Attack of the Vine! Set Championships to earn Rapunzel – Escaping the Tower. A regular version will be available as a participation prize, while players who reach the Top 8 can earn a foil version.
Promo availability may vary between locations, so make sure to contact your local game store before attending an event.
New Properties in Attack of the Vine
Wilds Unknown opened Disney Lorcana’s doors to Pixar with cards from Toy Story, The Incredibles, and Brave. Attack of the Vine! continues that expansion by introducing three more Pixar properties: Monsters, Inc., Up, and Turning Red.
Monsters, Inc. is easily one of the most natural fits for Lorcana. Sulley, Mike Wazowski, Boo, Randall, Celia Mae, and other familiar characters are joining the game alongside items such as the Scream Canister. The property also fits nicely into the set’s teamwork theme, particularly through cards like Sulley & Boo – Scare Buddies.
Up brings Carl Fredricksen and Russell into the realm, including Carl Fredricksen & Russell – Intrepid Explorers. It is great to see another Pixar classic represented, especially through cards that allow the two characters to work together rather than separating their adventure.
Finally, Turning Red introduces Meilin Lee, her friends, and 4*TOWN. Temporary Shift does a fantastic job of recreating Mei’s transformation into the red panda, while songs and concert-themed cards help give the property its own identity.
All three are exciting additions, but I’m especially interested to see what Monsters, Inc. can do. Disney Lorcana already has a huge variety of Monster characters, and that could leave plenty of room for future typal decks and strange combinations.
Attack of the Vine Release Dates
Disney Lorcana: Attack of the Vine! prereleases at participating local game stores and select Disney Parks and Disney Stores on July 17th.
The set receives its wider release at mass retailers and online stores on July 24th. Both dates are confirmed on the official Attack of the Vine product page.
The Core Constructed format also rotates alongside the prerelease on July 17th. Following rotation, cards from Fabled, Whispers in the Well, Winterspell, Wilds Unknown, and Attack of the Vine! will be legal in Core Constructed.
Final Thoughts
Attack of the Vine! feels like one of Lorcana’s most mechanically playful sets so far. The new Shift variants build upon a mechanic that has been part of the game since The First Chapter, but they push it in some genuinely strange directions. Shifting onto two characters makes perfect sense for Team cards, while Temporary Shift and Potato Shift show that Ravensburger is still willing to experiment.
The new Pixar properties are also fantastic additions. Monsters, Inc., Up, and Turning Red each bring something completely different to the set, and the cinematic artwork helps make this feel like a major conclusion rather than just another chapter.
Of course, defeating the Vine will not be quite that simple. The story continues with Illumineer’s Quest: The Great Hunny Rescue, but Attack of the Vine! should give Illumineers everything they need to begin fighting back.
