[Update-10:32PM, Jan 7] - in an announcement by Rising Star Games, it has been confirmed that SteamWorld Dig 2 is getting a physical release for both the Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4.
Original Post:
SteamWorld Dig 2, one of the most successful indie games in 2017, is already available for digital download on the PlayStation 4, PS Vita, Switch, and the PC. The game has been extremely popular and sold well on multiple platforms that several fans of the game voiced out their wish for SteamWorld Dig 2, to have a physical release.
Recent information recently surfaced that hints at the game’s possible physical version. The USK, also known as The Entertainment Software Self-Regulation Body has listed Rising Star Games as the publisher. If you remember, Rising Star Games was the company behind the physical version of SteamWorld Collection for the Wii U a few years ago, so it is possible that they will be releasing the physical copy of SteamWorld Dig 2 as well.
As for now, the only platform that could be getting the physical version of the game is the Nintendo Switch. This makes sense in a way, given the console’s small internal memory, which is why Switch fans of SteamWorld Dig 2 would love a hard copy as it would help them save storage space on their Nintendo Switch.
In a video blog series by the publisher caller "The Engine Room", Image & Form’s founder Brjann Sigurgeirsson and community manager Julian Guldbog talked about how they are committed to bringing more games on the Switch. They were thankful to fans who have made SteamWorld Dig 2’s digital release on the Switch successful and said that:
“We launched SteamWorld Dig 2 now and it’s by far, and I don’t even know what you say in English, far and beyond, best launch we’ve had for any game.”
When asked if they sold more on the Nintendo Switch than on Steam, Sigurgeirsson said, “Yup, and many, many more than we’ve sold on PS4 and Vita at this point." This goes to show that SteamWorld Dig 2’s success on Nintendo’s hybrid platform could lead to a physical version coming soon. However, since no official announcement has been made, talks about the physical version of the game should be taken with a grain of salt.
