The Killing Floor series is one that has had its ups and downs. I played the original on Steam and thoroughly enjoyed my time with it and while 2 was a step up of a sequel, 3 feels more or less similar sans new movement mechanics. The latest entry to the horde-survival shooter is something I can only recommend to loyal fans or if you have friends who enjoy the COD Zombies formula.
The game takes place in 2091. The Zed threat has grown bigger, but so have you. The game starts off players in a central hub area where they can crossplay with friends on PC or other systems with no problem. You have your same assortment of classes now called “perks” all of them doing the same thing in previous games, but you now have stronger and better weapons to do the job with.
The formula is nothing complex. Complete the mandatory 20 minute tutorial, choose a level and difficulty and go on the mission with your friends. Along the way you will earn equipment and currency that you can use for skillpoints, leveling up your weapons, and your character.
The same formula also holds the test of time. Survive waves of enemies, and the final wave will feature a boss for you to tackle with friends.
There is a lot of strategy and coordination involved in this whole process and you will absolutely need to play this with friends while connected to Discord or other voice chat means if you want to have a chance even on Normal difficulty.
Players can now slide and and dash from side to side with little to no cool down. You can also vault and do a lot more movement allowing you to think ahead and plan your next move.
The game is your standard FPS survival title. There are no graphics modes but the game ran at a steady 4K for me throughout my play time on the PS5 Pro. The graphics and audio are nothing to write home about as the entire point of the game is to make as accessible for players as possible, which is why I can forgive the visuals looking a little boring.
While I am not an ardent fan of the formula, I am looking forward to playing the game with friends and seeing where the game goes. With a lot more content than a lot of other games on launch, the game already looks really promising and there are no microtransactions here that will give players any advantage sans cosmetic features - but otherwise Killing Floor 3 is a solid entry that does deserve your consideration.
Conclusion
Killing Floor 3 is an entry that should be visited but only if you have friends who you know will be with you for the ride. It includes a lot of fun new features and mechanics, and should be on your list of games to play if you enjoy this chaotic formula.
