Yesterday we were finally treated to a trailer for the upcoming Need for Speed Payback by Electronic Arts at their EA Play 2017 Press Conference. Before then we had only caught glimpses of mist covered sky lines made by a Skyline. At EA Play, we were given some detailed gameplay footage which revealed just how intense this game may be.
Having watched it live during the broadcast, I was glued to my seat. As I imagine I would have been had I been driving that silver mustang through such chaos. The trailer plays like a scene from the Fast and the Furious movie franchise. Specifically, it reminds me of Dominic and Letty racing to steal a truck's car or fuel supplies.
Another thing it reminds me of is Need for Speed: The Run. The visuals are very similar to the game with some action sequences happening while you are racing. The slow mo crash scenes are a great touch (although I recall a similar attribute being available in some Hot Pursuit games), but I imagine that some hours of gameplay may make this feature a tad bit irritating. There are also some nods to the Need for Speed movie, I feel. Mustang - check. Koenigsegg - check. Open mountain road - check. Gas stations - check. Explosions - check. Cars trying to take said Mustang down - check.
According to EA, you will be going after the mafia and some cartels (or Houses as called in the story), so here's hoping for some inner city mayhem as you race through the streets. A new feature is the changing between characters in the single player campaign mode, which can be seen at the end of the trailer. In GTA V we were blessed with the opportunity to change characters at will, but it seems as though this swop will be more story driven than manually deliberate.
The game is slated for release 10 November 2017. If you missed the press conference, here is the gameplay trailer below, complements of the Need for Speed team.
