First impressions aren't everything, and Mina the Hollower is living proof. The opening stretch is admittedly slow, and the retro visual style isn't going to win everyone over on sight, that's for sure but it certainly wasn't love at first pixel here. But stick with it, because the longer you play, the more the game reveals just how meticulously crafted it really is. The level design opens up, the mechanics click into place, and before long you're fully invested in a surprisingly deep and thoroughly enjoyable experience. And at a very fair price point, giving it the time it deserves is an easy ask.
This is Yacht Club Games doing what they do best: Delivering gameplay that is simply top notch. The studio's ability to design satisfying, tightly tuned game feel is on full display here, and it's hard not to admire the craftsmanship once you're a few hours in. It's not a game for everyone but it will win over a lot of hearts.
That said, there's a lingering curiosity about what this team could accomplish if they stepped into a more modern graphical style. The talent is clearly there, and the gameplay chops are undeniable but pairing that level of design skill with a fresh visual approach could be something truly special. For now though, Mina the Hollower is a rewarding adventure that earns its keep the more you give it.
