Resident Evil 7, the latest main entry in the long-standing survival horror franchise has been out for more than one year now after a successful launch last January 2017. The game was received with mostly positive feedback as Capcom hoped that RE7 would re-capture the terror that fans had been asking for several years now.
In a blog post posted by Capcom celebrating RE7’s win at the 2018 Game Audio Network Guild Awards for Best VR Audio, the publisher also announced that Resident Evil 7 has also been successful commercially as the game passed 5.1 million copies sold across the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
“In order to provide an overwhelming, deeply immersive horror experience, the game’s system underwent a dramatic shift from its previous third-person camera to a new first-person perspective, helping to drive sales of the title to 5.1 million units worldwide,” Capcom said in the blog post.
Although 5.1 million copies sold is considered a good number to some developers, it’s probably just an average figure or even a disappointing one for triple-A publishers like Capcom, and for a widely known franchise such as Resident Evil. Resident Evil 6, the previous main entry in the franchise has sold 10 million units since its launch in 2012. However, the best selling Resident Evil game thus far still goes to Resident Evil 5, with sales of 11.84 million, since its release in 2009.
