A year ago, developer Jagex revealed their plans to port RuneScape and Old School RuneScape to smartphones and tablets, and they also announced yesterday that the original RuneScape servers for the PC will be shutting down permanently. However, it is worth noting that only RuneScape Classic will be going offline, the servers of Old School RuneScape will remain live.
The old browser-based MMORPG has been running for almost 17 years now, which is why longtime fans of the game will be experiencing the end of an era. RuneScape was one of the games that pioneered the online fantasy genre together with titles such as EverQuest and Asheron’s Call. Starting on August 6 at 3 AM ET, RuneScape Classic will no longer be available.
“It has been amazing to see such dedication amongst those of you who have kept playing RuneScape Classic over the last few years,” Jagex shared in a post on their website, “However, it’s not all fun and games.” The developer talked about the challenges with botting and the growing list of bugs that became too much to maintain for the team.
The good thing is that the servers will remain open for at least three more months so fans of the game can take this time to enjoy the last few moments of RuneScape Classic.
What was your best moment in the game? Will you miss RuneScape Classic when the servers shut down?
