RuneScape: Dragonwilds has a pretty sizeable map to explore. Even when you're early on and exploring the initially available areas, it can feel pretty overwhelming as you travel across Ashenfall. This is where mounts come into play.
The catch is you'll need to put in a little bit of work before the opportunity to ride comes along. They can also be missed initially, not unlike your first bow weapon, which isn't ideal. Here's how to unlock and use Mounts in RuneScape: Dragonwilds' 1.0 release.
How to unlock Mounts in RuneScape: Dragonwilds
If you're still working your way towards fighting the poisonous General Velgar, don't expect a riding buddy too soon. You can unlock mounts after defeating Velgar and gaining access to the Fellhollow region.
More specifically, you'll need to complete The Wild Hunt side quest for Vannaka to unlock your first Terrorbird mount. He can be found in the Bleakfields Valley area in Fellhollow, right after the main path splits into three. His makeshift camp is between the left and center split paths.
He'll task you with defeating Nature Spirits and looting three Primordial Hearts. These are essentially spirit versions of Terrorbirds that pack a harder punch. They can be found in a few different locations, all near Willow Trees and water, but there are conveniently three on the West side of the region.
The first can be found in Dragon's Run to the Northwest, along the main path that divides two ponds. Another can be found on the Western end of Emberwood, south of a dungeon and close to a large circular arena with a Green Dragon. A third can be found at the southern end of Witchwillow Range.
Defeat each one and loot a Primordial Heart from each. They shouldn’t be too difficult as long as you’re at least at a power level of 4. Return to Vannaka afterward and speak with him to end the quest.
One of the rewards he gives you is a Terrorbird mount that you can summon by holding down Triangle/Y on PlayStation/Xbox controllers, or ALT on PC. Between the quicker movement, higher jumps, and 200+ carry weight, I highly suggest completing this side quest.
Different Terrorbird color variants can be found through enemy drops or purchased from vendors. Additionally, the Umbral Sands region later introduces Magic Carpet mounts. These are better suited for traversing desert environments. No worries about missing them - the first one is provided as part of a main quest.
How to change your Mount appearance in RuneScape: Dragonwilds
Whether you want to change to a different mount or you're just confused about how to equip the other variants you've found or purchased, there is a good chance you'll be left in the dark. The game regrettably doesn't explain it well, after all.
Good thing it's a pretty quick process! You first want to access the Spell Book menu, either from bringing up the general overlay or while you have the Spell Wheel up. You'll see an option to change the tab over to Mounts. This leads to a page with every mount in the game. Greyed-out ones are locked, but you can freely switch between every one you own so far here.
Now that you can zoom past enemies and leap to new heights, the RuneScape: Dragonwilds map will really open up. Just remember to slow down now and then. There are a whole lot of secrets to be found on this map.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
