The production of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is going along quite smoothly at Paramount Pictures. However, there’s a rumor going around that they might rename Sonic the Hedgehog 4 to Sonic CD.
According to a Patreon post from Daniel Richtman, an insider known as DanielRPK online (via The Direct because the Patreon post is locked behind a paywall), Paramount is reportedly considering moving away from the sequential numbering system for Sonic Movie 4 and renaming it Sonic CD as a reference to the 1993 game of the same name that introduced Amy Rose and Metal Sonic — both of whom appeared in the mid-credits scene of Sonic Movie 3.
The validity of rumors reported by DanielRPK varies depending on what films and franchises he’s talking about, so it’s important to take this rumor about Sonic Movie 4’s title change with a grain of salt.
Sonic Movie 4 changing its title to Sonic CD may be a nice homage to the game in which Amy Rose and Metal Sonic made their debut for the fans that played it, but at the same time it’ll confuse younger audiences who never experienced Sonic CD to begin with (unless, of course, their parents introduced the game to them through Sonic Origins). The sequential numbering system for the Sonic films is perfect as is, and I seriously hope the title doesn’t change by the time it comes out.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 releases in theaters March 19, 2027.
