Nintendo hosted one of their more packed Nintendo Directs this week, but they saved the biggest news for the last reveal. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom got a lengthy new trailer that showed a Hyrule swarming with dangerous enemies and falling into darkness as an ancient evil rises from its subterranean prison.
The trailer opens on a somber note as Hyrule is covered in an oppressive storm. A sinister voice commands its minions to rise and tear Hyrule down as the Blood Moon grows big in the sky and begins raining down fireballs. New enemy types appear, including a dragon with three, flaming heads and a golem made of tech-infused stone.
The trailer also shows off some of Link’s new abilities, including a Shiekah-tech gauntlet that grants powers similar to those offered by the Shiekah slate from Breath of the Wild. Link also has access to several new vehicles including an odd-looking car, a hovercraft, and what appears to be a hot air balloon.
Zelda also provides voice-over expressing her doubts that Link can defeat the newly risen Ganon, who is shown rising from his prison below Hyrule Castle. The same, eerie, backward music plays over the title card before a stinger that shows Link and Zelda facing Ganon in the dungeons. Zelda has another bit of VO here where she calls on someone to “lend him your power.”
The trailer closes with confirmation of the May 12th release date. After the video, Nintendo revealed a Collector’s Edition for the game that comes with a steelbook case, art book, pin set, and poster. They also unveiled a new Link amiibo based on his outfit in the new game that will grant a unique glider appearance in Tears of the Kingdom.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom launches on May 12th, 2023 for the Nintendo Switch. For more from the February Nintendo Direct, check out the surprise launch of Metroid Prime Remastered and all the new info on Pikmin 4.
