Where Else in Japan Can Forza Horizon 6's New Expansion Take Fans

Playground Games listened to years of fan requests and finally took the Forza Horizon series to Japan earlier this year. After letting the playerbase race across Tokyo City, mountain passes, and numerous rural tracks, the studio is now almost ready to take racers in a new direction with the first expansion. Since that direction hasn't been announced yet, it's time for some hopeful speculation about where it could go.

The new location is the first mystery. The base game already packs in so much iconic Japanese geography, meaning the first expansion needs to introduce a distinct new map. One strong candidate might have been staring at drivers from a distance all this time: Mount Fuji. While it’s shown off on everything from the cover art to the background of most races, Mount Fuji is not actually accessible in the game. This might be from the studio not wanting to disrespect the sacred nature of the mountain.

However, if you played the classic Forza Motorsport titles on the Xbox 360, Fujimi Kaido might come to mind. This fictional mountain circuit was wrapped around Mount Fuji for extreme drifting sessions. Forza Horizon 6 could bring back this beloved track and put its own spin on it.

The studio could embed it within a new open-world region with Mount Fuji towering right in the middle. To that, the studio could add wild roadways with back-to-back hairpins, steep downhills, and rock tunnels carved into the mountains.

Street racing and drifting-focused twisting events would be the biggest draw here. A technical driving sandbox would be a dream for any fan with a precision-tuned drifting vehicle, finally leaving behind the base game's overuse of hypercars for once.

Other than the location and races, another avenue Playground could focus on for the expansion is the customization. Even with five entries behind it, the latest Forza Horizon's visual modification system still feels incredibly restricted compared to the local car culture it is trying to emulate. The team could lean into this with flashy body kits and wraps that almost hurt the eyes to look at. Allow for deeper interior decorations and underglow neon lighting for both nostalgia and to pay homage to the racing games that many older fans grew up with.

Forza Horizon 6's first mystery expansion is launching on January 21, 2027, so the official announcement with all the details shouldn't be too far off. If this doesn't deliver on the potential discussed above, there's always the second expansion to look forward to as well.

However, at least one of the drops is usually designated as the crossover DLC, bringing another IP into the mix (like Hot Wheels or LEGO), going by previous entries in the franchise. We will have to wait and see where the developer has decided to go in its post-launch DLCs before it leaves behind Japan for another region in the next game.
