In the past few days, Eurogamer has reported that Microsoft gave the go-signal to revive and begin the development of a new Fable game. According to the reports, Microsoft has asked Playground, the developer of the Forza Horizon series, to take the helm with the development of Fable since the original team behind the game, Lionhead Studios, has closed its doors and disbanded back in 2016. Playground has reportedly assigned 200 people to work on the project out of its new offices in the UK.
A word of warning though, before fans you start counting down the days before the game’s release, note that this is still pure speculation, and no official announcement has been made thus far. In fact, in a statement released by Microsoft to some media outlets, they said that “Microsoft does not comment on rumor or speculation.” Although the company neither confirmed nor rejected the idea, let’s not keep our hopes up until an official announcement has been made.
The rumored Fable game is reportedly going to be an open-world action role-playing game, but even if Playground is really doing this, don’t expect for a release anytime soon. Reports indicate that the game is still in its infancy, and the team at Playground is just starting to assemble a team that will be working on this game.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Fable co-creator Simon Carter mentioned that, “I have slightly mixed feelings”, he said. “On the one hand it’s great for the UK games industry, and very pleasing that Fable isn’t dead, on the other hand, it is a little curious to get rid of the team that is uniquely expert in making Fable, and then try to make Fable.”
If these recent reports are true, it is definitely interesting to see how Playground will approach the development of Fable. Will they make the game familiar by continuing on what previous games in the series did in the past? Or will Playground take a different path and innovate Fable in a new way? Only time will tell.
What do you think about this rumor? Will Fable be successfully revived with Playground on its helm? Or should they just reassemble the original team behind the game? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
