Ah yes, turn-based JRPG how I have missed you. Since the early days of Final Fantasy many western and Japanese RPGs featured turn-based battles, but in recent years it has fallen out of favor for real-time action. However, the upcoming ONE PIECE ODYSSEY from Bandai Namco will feature turn-based team battles between the Straw Hats and many of their foes throughout their adventures. The newest trailer showcased gameplay from Alabasta, a previous stop on the crew’s adventure. The area battles place the Straw Hats in their own battle area, with multiple zones of combat where they face off. With skills, items, and interesting modifiers, players will have plenty of ways to fight their foes in One Piece Odyssey.
Of course, battling isn’t everything. The gameplay trailer also showcases some of the calmer moments, exploring the sandy realm of Alabasta. Side quests, conversations with old friends, and new characters and places not featured in the anime will give One Piece fans a whole canon-adjacent story that touches upon some of their favorite arcs.
While it remains to be seen how the whole game will play out and what locations the Straw Hats will revisit, the trailer is an exciting glimpse into the direction of this game and our first look at how it will be played. Check it out below and let us know your thoughts in the comments!
One Piece Odyssey will release on January 13, 2023 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S.
