In 1986, Clive Barker released The Hellbound Heart, introducing readers to the horrifying world that would eventually become the Hellraiser franchise. I wonder if Barker knew at the time just how large and dedicated its fandom would become.
Classic horror has experienced a major gaming revival lately, from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre to the upcoming Halloween game. Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival is part of that growing wave, but rather than following the familiar asymmetrical multiplayer formula, it is bringing Pinhead and the Cenobites into a full single-player survival horror experience.
After going hands-on with the game at Summer Game Fest, I’m convinced that Hellraiser: Revival could be one of the most exciting horror releases of 2026.
What Is Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival?
Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival is an upcoming first-person survival horror action game developed and published by Saber Interactive.
Players take control of Aidan, who must use the supernatural power of a mysterious puzzle box known as the Genesis Configuration to rescue his girlfriend, Sunny, from the otherworldly Labyrinth. Naturally, that journey will put him directly in the path of Pinhead, the Cenobites, and the horrific forces that worship them.
Clive Barker has been involved with the project, while Doug Bradley is returning as Pinhead for the first time in nearly two decades. Between this game and the recent Hellraiser presence at Halloween Horror Nights, it is extremely exciting to see the franchise returning in such a big way.
Honestly, when I first heard that a Hellraiser game was being developed, I assumed it would be another asymmetrical multiplayer horror title. I was very happy to learn that it was instead a story-driven single-player game, and after playing it at Summer Game Fest, I’m completely sold.
What Is the Gameplay Like in Hellraiser: Revival?
Hellraiser: Revival puts a particularly strong emphasis on the action side of survival horror.
Based on the demo I played at Summer Game Fest, the gameplay features a healthy mixture of horror, combat, exploration, and environmental puzzles. That combination feels perfect for the Hellraiser franchise, which has always blended physical violence with more psychological and supernatural forms of terror.
Aidan can fight cultists and other enemies using conventional firearms and melee weapons, but the Genesis Configuration is what makes the combat especially interesting.
During the demo, I could use the puzzle box to absorb incoming fire before launching the energy back as a fireball. Another ability allowed me to send pieces of shrapnel flying toward nearby cultists. These powers add some much-needed variety to the encounters, preventing the game from feeling like another horror shooter where you simply fire at everything that comes into sight.
The Genesis Configuration is also incorporated into the game’s puzzles. One sequence required me to manipulate a set of rotating platforms until they formed a pathway that I could safely cross. The puzzles I encountered reminded me of classic adventure-game challenges, but they were still intuitive enough that they did not bring the pacing to a complete stop.
Of course, the Cenobites are also waiting for you.
The horror is turned up considerably whenever they appear, with the game leaning heavily into the disturbing imagery, violence, and body horror associated with Barker’s original creation. Some threats can be confronted directly, while others may require players to hide or escape rather than stand and fight.
When Does Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival Release?
Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival will be released on October 8, 2026.
That is an incredibly fitting release date for a game like this. Horror fans will be able to experience the Hellraiser Halloween Horror Nights attraction during the Halloween season and then come home to confront Pinhead all over again.
I fully intend to do both.

Final Thoughts
I’m incredibly excited for Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival.
I love seeing classic horror villains receive their own video games, but I’m even happier that this is not another asymmetrical multiplayer experience. Pinhead and the Cenobites deserve a complete narrative-driven horror game that can properly explore their world, and everything I played at Summer Game Fest suggests Saber Interactive understands that.
The combat is more action-packed than I initially expected, the Genesis Configuration introduces some entertaining supernatural abilities, and the puzzles provide a welcome change of pace between encounters. Most importantly, the game is not afraid to embrace the grotesque imagery and disturbing atmosphere that made Hellraiser so memorable in the first place.
October 8th cannot come soon enough.
