As Epic Games’ crown jewel Fortnite continuous to soar gaming charts worldwide, a new report cited the game as one of the factors leading to the dissolution of the marriages of several couples throughout 2018.
The U.K divorce site, DivorceOnline, claimed that more than 200 couples have filed for divorce this year, saying that Fortnite and addiction to several other video games by their significant other is a vital factor for the divorce.
A representative from DivorceOnline stated that “these numbers equate to roughly 5 percent of the 4,665 petitions we have handled since the beginning of the year and as one of the largest filers of divorce petitions in the U.K is a pretty good indicator.”
A few months ago, The World Health Organization revealed that Gaming Disorder, or the addiction to playing video games that results to the disruption of ordinary lives and relationships, is affecting a number of people across the globe. The WHO revealed that a diagnosis for Gaming Disorder would mean that the player is consistently addicted to playing games over the course of several months.
Moreover, there is also the issue of microtransactions as money being spent on games such as Fortnite is also part of the problem. Research firm SuperData revealed that players have spent a whopping $8.2 billion on digital games in July 2018, with Fortnite taking one of the top spots on the list.
