GeekOn! has expanded a lot from The Ultimate Boardgame Backpack and one of my favorite things is the compact bundle of the XL Dice Case/Tray and Dice Tower. It’s a mouthful, but it offers up a lot of utility for the size of the case.
I like what the NYC-based company designed with the Taco Bit Case, but this dice-centric bundle is more my speed. It’s big enough that I can consolidate all of my dice in one case. ALIEN roleplaying dice, D&D character dice, additional RPG dice, and just about every set that I’ve got scattered around the house.
The more games I play, the more dice I get, and I think this gaming peripheral should take care of them all.
What’s In The Box
The dice case (XL) might seem a little bulky at first, but when you consider that it contains the detachable dice tray underneath—and it can fit the foldable dice tower in the inner pocket—then it starts to seem more reasonable. You’re getting two additional products that are very functional along with the dice storage. Also, you can finally get donate or repurpose all of those little velvet or plastic baggies, wooden boxes, or whatever-thing-you’ve-got that’s currently holding a small set of dice. Consolidate everything into this durable hard case.
So, yes, the case is quite big. The diameter measures 11.4” so you’ve got an octagonal foot of dice heft laying around the house. But it stores up to 300 dice! Now, that’s with the foam liner removed, which I will likely never do. Still, if you keep the high-density foam in there with all the little dice holes, it can still fit up to 150 dice.
If you’re looking for something smaller, you’ll have to check out the original dice case and tray.
And then the internal pocket nicely secures the foldable dice tower with a velcro strap.
Lastly, whenever you need to start rolling crits in a hardcore campaign—or smashing monsters in King of Tokyo: Dark Edition with those massive dice—then just take off the velvet-lined dice rolling tray.
The bundle brings you three useful products in one package. A good start.
Aesthetics And Design
The design is sturdy for the case and velvet-lined tray, but light and compact for the folding dice tower. This means that everything can get boxed up quickly and easily.
Again, I’m a fan of simplicity, so I’m invariably going to pick colors like the black and red design for the GeekOn! products. It’s tasteful. The red pops really nicely off of the black stitched material.
The foam liner is a nice touch because it lets the dice nestle into the case and stay secure during travel. If you have a ton of dice, you can take the liner out to accommodate the bigger volume of dice, but I want to keep the high-density foam inside.
The dice tower is a little wonky sometimes, but that’s to be expected from the foldable design. Once you get the snap securely on, though, it stands well and will serve its purpose.
It has the same nylon design as the dice case, and I like that it’s able to fit snugly in the case so that you can bring it out whenever you need it.
The dice tray is a slick feature, as it nests under the case. You can bring it out quickly, but it can also just stay out of the way if you don’t need it.
To be honest, I’ll use this much more than the dice tower because I like the tactile element in rolling the dice myself rather than dropping them into a tower.
Gameplay Use
The bundle is versatile because you have two options for rolling dice—just the dice tray or the tray and tower in conjunction. I guess if you want to, you can just use the dice tower, but that strikes me as heretical, and also disrespectful to the table.
I’ve fit several different sets of RPG dice in my case, and I’ve even been able to organize relevant RPG card decks and other gaming components in the case. As I gather more dice, I won’t be able to do this as much, but it’s another benefit of the larger case that I can take advantage of right now.
A middle sleeve separates the dice storage from the inner pocket. I like that divider because it helps to prevent dice from getting stuck in the pocket, but it also is a softer material that can take the punishment from any metal dice you have. My set is rather heavy and I imagine it might scratch or damage the nylon foldable dice tower if they made contact frequently.
As a set, the case, tray, and tower make a persuasive case for being the go-to case for your dice needs. Leave the nice wooden tower and other goodies at the house. Take this durable bundle whenever you need out for a gaming adventure. It’s going to be my travel set.
Maybe I’ll fit my toothbrush and toothpaste in there as well…
What It Could Have Done Better
There is a little bit of mixed messaging in the marketing for the detachable dice tray. Some of the tags and descriptions label it as velvet-lined while others describe the material as felt-lined. It’s not a big slip-up, but GeekOn! should definitely look into it to avoid irritating customers who expected a certain material and got another.
And the size of the case is something that may bother some gamers. I have a decent amount of dice, but I don’t have 150, and I don’t know if I’ll ever have 300. Maybe downscaling the size of the case, to 100 and 200 dice, respectively, would entice buyers who think that the XL Dice Case is just too massive.
If you do want to scale down a step, you can always check out the regular Dice Case and Tray, which holds up to 75 dice. You lose the integrated pocket for the Dice Tower, but you still get a nice portable case and tray for your gaming dice.
But I appreciate the functionality. The case, tray, and tower all together is a really nice combination.
Verdict
The GeekOn! XL Dice Case/Tray and Dice Tower Bundle is a one-time buy that should settle your gaming needs for all things dice.
It’s sturdy, it’s portable, and it streamlines your packing into one easy case. Drop it in a bag with your RPG manuals or your board games, and you’ll be able to pull it out and start playing sooner.
Anything that eliminates frustration and gets players gaming faster is a product worth considering. Investing in your games is a way of improving the quality of your tabletop gaming experience. And the dice cast/tray and tower bundle from GeekOn! is a way of getting all three accessories for a little cheaper.
I’ve got my dice stored and ready to go. What about you?!
