I went into the SACRATA playtest expecting another entry in a genre that's been flooded for years now. What I got instead was the most pleasant surprise I've had in months. Describing it as Vampire Survivors meets Diablo undersells how well the two halves actually fit together.
You get the escalating chaos and awesome power building skills, but wrapped in something with real weight to it, where loot matters and your character feels like it belongs in an action RPG rather than a stat sheet with a generic skill set attached.
It's also gorgeous, which was not something I expected. The art direction carries a dark, textured look that stands apart from the flat pixel style a lot of this genre defaults to, and the moment a screen fills with enemies and your abilities start overlapping, it becomes genuinely spectacular to watch. There's a visual clarity to the mayhem too, which matters more than it sounds when you're tracking a hundred things at once.
Now, like a lot of playtests, it isn't perfect. This is a playtest, and it shows in places, with some balance that needs attention and rough edges that will hopefully get sanded down before release. But the foundation underneath is strong enough that none of that bothered me much.
Either way, I love this game! The playtest is live on PC now, and if you've got even a passing interest in either half of that comparison, it's worth your time. SACRATA has moved from something I'd never heard of to something I'm actively waiting on.
