How to Activate the Carpenter's Crane in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse

On your way to fighting one of the first three bosses in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, you’ll find a strange clue. It shows you that you need to interact with a certain spot on a map, but you may not recognize the location due to the way it’s formatted. Don’t worry, though, as we’re going to show you exactly where to go and what to do with the Carpenter’s Crane Sketch.

How to activate the Carpenter’s Crane

You may think that you just need to poke around the area in which you found the sketch, but that’s not going to do you much good. Move downward to the Prison Tower area. It’s easiest if you look at the sketch and note the small rectangle on the left side. You should notice a similar rectangle on your actual map. But the sketch seems to have more of the map available, doesn’t it?

The issue you may be having is that the sketch the game gives you doesn’t quite look like your map, with a markedly different representation of pretty much everything. Plus the space in the upper right-hand area just isn’t currently on the map at all, so it’s very easy to get confused by much of this. But this sketched area is still meant to represent the Prison Tower, you just haven’t unlocked the elevator that opens up the map enough to match it just yet.

All you need to do here is head to the upper right-hand corner of this room where you’ll see a weird switch that you can whip onto. The switch animates, but hitting it doesn’t really do anything. Grapple onto the switch and swing in whichever direction, then grapple again. You’ll see the device attached to the switch growing wider. Just keep doing this and the switch will finally activate and allow you to progress.

If you look at your map after doing this, you’ll no doubt notice that it now looks much closer to the sketch you found. It’s easy to see that the switch itself is indeed at the bottom of a structure and not at the top as it appears to be when viewed from your previous point of reference. Here’s a look at the map itself if you’d like to compare it directly with the above image.

Once you do this, an elevator comes down that leads to a guardian boss fight that grants you one of the three keys needed to enter the Catacombs. This boss, unlike Medusa, is extremely easy to the point that you can probably just button mash and win on your first try as long as you heal when needed. That’s all you need to solve the riddle of the Carpenter Crane’s Sketch in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse.
