How to Beat Medusa in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse

Of the three early bosses in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, two of them don’t really pose much of a problem. Medusa, on the other hand, requires a bit of pattern recognition. If you’re having some trouble dealing with her and want to know how to best deal with her, we’ve got you covered. With this info in mind, she won’t pose nearly as much of a threat in the end.

How to beat Medusa

You’ll notice the boss arena has two sides; one on the left and the other on the right. Each side has a platform suspended above the ground and the round itself. You can either manage this fight with melee or ranged attacks, but melee is much quicker and still mostly safe if you know what you’re doing. Using ranged attacks will obviously require a spear, but you can use whatever you want otherwise.

When you’re standing directly in front of her on a platform, she’ll either pull her fist back in an arc or pull it straight back. If she pulls it back in an arc, you’ll immediately need to drop off the platform onto the ground below. But she has a spiked tentacle that will slam both parts of the ground, so you’ll need to use the whip hook to return to the platforms before those hit.

However, if she pulls it back horizontally, she’s about to use her stone ray. When she does this, simply turn to face the other direction. Since you’re not looking at her, you won’t get turned to stone. Also, she routinely coils herself around a post before changing sides, so when she does this, move to the other side and immediately start hitting her once she appears.

After doing enough damage, she gets stunned. You’ll want to move away from her, as she then does a long combo that will hit you repeatedly for huge damage. After a bit, you’ll see a warning indication from the ceiling. This means a chunk of debris will fall onto the ground below. When this happens, drop down and move behind this and wait, as she uses a powerful multi-beam attack.

The rest of the fight follows suit, albeit with some permutations. She’ll start sending medusa heads after you normally, so make sure to avoid or attack those to take them out of play. Smaller pieces of debris will also start falling, so you need to watch these and avoid them carefully, although they don’t do much damage. As long as you keep your melee strikes up and move when you’re in danger, you should emerge victorious.

That’s really all it takes to put Medusa down for good (or at least turn her into a Tarot card). Utilizing the above information will give you everything you need to know how to beat Medusa in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse without too much trouble, so just focus on learning her tells and you might even beat her without taking a single hit.
