Nioh 3 - How to Deal With Mujina Chests

In addition to all of the enemies and friendly collectible yokai that you'll come across in Nioh 3, some can be interacted with through emotes. One of the most troublesome of those is the Mujina, a trickster yokai that copies your appearance. If you fail to appease it, you’ll basically have to fight a version of yourself. Here's how to deal with the Mujina in Nioh 3 without having to fight.

How to deal with a Mujina in Nioh 3

The trick to dealing with a Mujina is to copy its gesture within a certain amount of time. To do that, we'll need to use the awkwardly controlled gesture menu and emote. To emote in Nioh 3, you need to press R1 + the Options button simultaneously.

This opens up a small pop-up menu with three columns of gestures. They're categorized as positive, neutral, and negative gestures.

Select the same gesture that the Mujina used to make it respond in excitement. The devious yokai will then disappear, leaving behind a pile of loot. If you choose wrong, you’ll have to fight it.

We recommend going somewhere safe and testing out the emotes when you have the time. You'll have to recognize the emotes purely by how they look, which isn't the easiest thing to do when you’re put on the spot. Thankfully, the Mujina doesn’t seem to perform any gestures beyond the top nine in your menu.

How to tell Mujina chests apart

It might look like it's all up to chance whether a Mujina will pop out of the chest, but there are actually some very subtle differences between a Mujina chest and a regular one. If you're not confident with your speed while dealing with Mujina, here’s what to look out for.

The primary tell for Mujina chests is their edge clamps. In the Warring States and Bakumatsu eras, the chests are red with three straight golden edge clamps. The Mujina versions are crooked.

In the Heian era, normal chests are black and have two golden edge clamps on the side. Meanwhile, the Mujina version has three golden edge clamps instead.

Remember these details so you’re not caught off guard the next time you stumble upon a Mujina. Furthermore, if you want to confront a Mujina without losing your stamina and taking a bit of damage, use the Whistle gesture. This will make the little yokai peek out from the chest before jumping out on their own.

Nioh 3 is available now on PS5 and PC.
