A Switch accessory that is modeled after NES controllers is available was previously featured at last week’s Nintendo Direct. The controllers look great design-wise, but its functionality is somewhat limited. The NES-themed Joy-Cons are priced at $60 a pair and will only work with NES games that players can only access via a subscription to the upcoming Nintendo Switch Online service.
The official Nintendo AU website reported that the accessory will only work on select NES titles via the subscription service, “Please note: Nintendo Entertainment System Controllers can only be used while detached from the Nintendo Switch system, and only to play NES - Nintendo Switch Online games. Nintendo Entertainment System Controllers can be charged by attaching to the Nintendo Switch system.”
While the accessory’s design cleverly resembles the controller of the NES and is practically made to emulate the experience of playing on the vintage console, its functionality still remains limited and could have been better if they could also be used to play regular Switch games.
