New sales figures have just been released for last week and they show that the Nintendo Switch has managed to move another 394,379 units over in Japan. This means that the total sales of Nintendo’s hybrid console in the region have passed 12.81 million units. To put that into perspective, the lifetime sales of the Nintendo Wii, which is Nintendo’s hugest selling home console to date worldwide, only managed to move 12.77 million units in Japan during its 7-year manufacturing life. Not only has the Switch surpassed this number, but it also managed to do it in half the time!
Now, these numbers might not really be that surprising considering the Wii generation was when mobile gaming first really burst onto the scene. Japan has usually tended to be a more mobile-focused country with handhelds and mobile platforms doing more successful than traditional home consoles. For example, the PS4 has only managed to sell around 9 million units in Japan during its near 7-year life. Pretty much any way you slice it, the Switch is definitely a success! Worldwide the Switch has now managed to sell-through ~53 million units.
What do you all think of the Nintendo Switch’s current success?
