The Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds open network test has come to a close, but those who missed out are getting a special surprise before the game’s full release. Fans will get the opportunity to play the single-player demo for free in the middle of September.
Sega shared the announcement through the official Sonic the Hedgehog X (formerly Twitter) account overnight Tuesday, shortly after the servers for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds’ open beta test shut down. The demo is said to be a “offline single-player experience only,” which means there’s no access to online races until launch day. You’ll only be able to play Grand Prix mode in the meantime.

The open network test allowed fans to play as a handful of characters, including Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose, Shadow, Omega, Cream and Cheese, Jet, Wave, Storm, and Zazz. We’re not sure whether we’ll be able to play as other characters in the demo, like Rouge, Sage, or even Metal Sonic. Sega will release more details about the Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds single-player demo at a later date.
Character roster aside, I had a fun time playing the Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds open beta test over Labor Day weekend. The gameplay was a little more balanced than it was in the closed beta earlier this year — depending on the mode you’re playing. Grand Prix mode was easy enough where you could finish either in first place or, on average, third place, but online mode everyone was killing each other like the Red Wedding in Game of Thrones.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds releases September 25.
