Spotlight - We Went Hands On with Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis

SGF 2026 was absolutely stacked with incredible moments but walking into the Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis demo at SGF 2026, the weight of expectation was real. As a long-term fan of the series, people like me who have followed Lara Croft across decades, reboots, and reinventions, the bar we carried in with us was not a low one. Crystal Dynamics had a lot to prove, and frankly, a lot to protect. What we did not expect was to walk out of that demo not just satisfied, but genuinely floored.

Legacy of Atlantis doesn't simply meet the standard set by this franchise's best moments, it seems to understand, on a deeply felt level, what made those moments matter in the first place. The artistry on display is staggering, and the dedication to honoring Lara's legacy is not marketing language here, it is evident in every single frame of what I played.

The highlights are almost too good to describe without sounding hyperbolic, but here we go anyway. The animations alone are worth the price of admission. No seriously, the needle dive sequences, where Lara cuts into deep, dark pools with an elegance that is almost balletic, are some of the most beautiful movement animations we have seen in any action-adventure game in years. And then there are the dinosaur fights. Calling them impressive feels like an understatement. They are chaotic, terrifying, and thrilling in exactly the way that only Tomb Raider, at its most confident and unhinged, has ever managed to be.

There is a showmanship to Legacy of Atlantis that suggests a development team that is not just competent, but genuinely passionate, a trait that I highly admire, a team that grew up with this franchise and refused to let it be anything less than extraordinary on their watch.

Can we please fast forward to 2027? That question has been stuck in my head since leaving the demo floor, and no amount of excellent fall releases has managed to dislodge it. In a season already packed to the point of absurdity with major titles demanding attention and wallet share, Legacy of Atlantis is the game that keeps rising back to the top of the mental list. It is not the loudest announcement of SGF 2026, but IMHO it was the most complete and convincing demonstration of what this medium is capable of when a beloved franchise is handled with genuine care. It is, without question, my Top Moment of SGF 2026, and I cannot wait to get back into those ruins!
