Subnautica 2: Early Access Done Right

Subnautica 2 launched into Early Access on May 14 on PC and Xbox Series X|S (day one on Game Pass, by the way), and while we are a bit late to the late to the party, we need to say it plainly: this game already slaps!

Unknown Worlds took everything that made the original a masterpiece, moved it to a brand new alien ocean world called Zazura, and wrapped it in some of the most stunning audiovisual design we've experienced this year. The water reacts with jaw dropping realism, bioluminescent creatures pulse through the deep, and the soundscape shifts from serene to absolutely terrifying the moment you drift too far from the shallows.

The new BioMod system lets you alter your own genetic code to adapt to the planet's hostile environment, four player co-op means you can finally share the wonder (and the dread) with friends, and the overhauled sculptural base building system frees you from rigid grids so your underwater habitats actually feel like they belong on the ocean floor. The Tadpole vehicle, the returning Prawn Suit, dynamic ocean currents that can drag you into the abyss without warning, and Leviathans that will absolutely ruin your day round out an Early Access package that already feels remarkably complete.

Whether you devoured the original Subnautica or you've never dipped a toe into the series, this is one of the easiest recommendations we can make right now. Unknown Worlds has already shipped the EA 1.1 Adaptive Measures update with creature behavior improvements, new biomods, and quality of life upgrades, and EA 1.2 is on the way with multiplayer voice chat, revival mechanics, and Habitat Builder improvements. The roadmap stretches across two to three years of Early Access development before 1.0, and the studio has been transparent about taking community feedback seriously every step of the way, just like they did with the original. No microtransactions, no battle passes, just honest survival built and expanded through regular patches. The present is already bright, but the future looks even brighter. This is Early Access done right, and it just feels good to see a studio deliver on its promise this early in the journey. Get in the water!
