Once again we reach the time of year where The Game Awards gives us an amazing list of games that are to come through their own World Premier trailers, entertained by performers from a variety of talents and styles, and anticipate the announcement of which games have won their respective awards. You got to place your vote and as a collective whole, the decisions are finally being announced. There are a lot of categories and I am happy to say a variety of winners. Back at the Game Awards 2018, the awards were stacked in favor of the two largest titles of the year, but now we have a few more categories to work with and a much wider spread of the awards.
To kick it off, we will start with the one award that everybody wants to know: Game of the Year! I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect this title to take this award, but at the same time, I feel it is well deserved. Congratulations to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice on being the 2019 Game of the Year! Now on to the full list of awards.
During the Pre-Show we had the following awards announced:
Best Community Support – Destiny 2
Best Score & Music – Death Stranding

Then, the official Game Awards 2019 show began to give us:

Interesting enough, they held a fan-based category where players could vote for the title to be considered the “fan favorite” and the Players Voice voted: Fire Emblem: Three Houses
All-in-all, The Game Awards 2019 was an amazing show and I feel the games that won their awards were all well deserved and great picks from those who voted. Although, I do want to point out one of my favorite moments of the show was during Reggie Fils-Aimé time on stage as he presented the Fresh Indie Game award. During his speech, he spoke about his leaving and that he will always be an ambassador for video games and their helpfulness to the community, but the quote that stuck out to me was,
“I think this is the most important award of the night because I believe that indie developers are the most important creators of this industry. Why? Because every nominee this year, and every year was at one time an indie developer.”
If you follow the GameTyrant team member’s game types of focus, then you know that I am a huge fan of the indie game industry. I love how unique and diverse the games that come from them are, even though they tend to be a hit-or-miss group. But it is the fact that there are so many developers that are trying to push through their different ideas to present something new to gamers everywhere that make the group stand out to me. It was amazing to hear such a big name in the industry also recognizes the drive, compassion, and importance the indie developer community has on the game industry as a whole.
So, what did you think of The Game Awards this year? Do you agree with the list of winners that came out this past year? Did the games you vote on win any of the categories you wanted?
