So it seems that Nintendo isn't the only one having a good year in terms of hardware sales. As of Dec 3, Sony has sold over 70.6 million units of PS4 since its release back in 2014.
It has been reported last June that the console sold 60.4 million units. Meaning, Sony was able to sell 10.2 million units in a span of 6 months, which shows how the console is doing very well. Take note however, that the latest data is accurate as of December 3rd, so it will definitely still increase before 2017 draws to a close with all the frantic holiday shopping we can expect in the weeks to come.
In terms of software, there have been a staggering 617.8 million PS4 games sold, retail and digital combined. In a press release by Sony, they stated their appreciation to gamers who are still patronizing their system.
“We are delighted that so many people are enjoying the unique entertainment proposition of PlayStation 4, and that an emerging technology like PlayStation VR continues to gain traction,” said Andrew House, Chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment. “I cannot thank our fans and partners enough. Their support, since the launch of the very first PlayStation in 1994, has helped to make PlayStation one of the biggest console gaming networks in the world. We will continue to work closely with partners to maintain this momentum, and remain steadfast in making PS4 the best place to play.”
The PlayStation VR is also doing great in case you're wondering. As of today, the PSVR has surpassed sales of over 2 million units globally and combine that to the 12.2 million PSVR games sold to date. After all these years, the PS4 is still very much alive and kicking after being in the market for 3 years. The recent surge in sales is probably due to the fact that upgraded consoles, in the form of the PS4 Slim, and PS4 Pro, were released late last year. Nonetheless, Sony is definitely ending 2017 with a bang!
What do you think of Sony's milestone? Are you still contemplating whether to get a PS4?
