During a Yu-Gi-Oh Trading Card Game event in Germany, it was revealed that starting with the May 2020 release of the booster set Eternity Code, Konami will no longer be producing Normal Rare cards. They have been “retired” for the time being. “Rares are not gone indefinitely, but there are no plans to bring them back.” To those who are unfamiliar, Normal Rares are cards that are printed with a silver or bronze foil lettering but do not have a holographic image in their card artwork. Konami’s rationale is that “Rares did not seem that exciting [anymore].”
Normal Rares have been a staple of the card production process since 1999. They have a 1:1 ratio of appearing in a booster pack, unless a Super or Ultra Rare or another rarity was placed in the pack instead. Super Rares are looking to be produced with the same 1:1 ratio that Normal Rares were produced with; essentially replacing them. Speculators and vendors suggest that changing the rarities might make Normal Rares more valuable than cards of higher rarities.
I will personally miss the Normal Rares. I loved the lettering on them. Do you play the Yu-Gi-Oh Trading Card Game? What do you think?
