PlayStation's latest State of Play has had one of the strongest showings in recent history. Sony presented blockbuster sequels, long-awaited franchise returns, and entirely new IPs. The event also defined what the PlayStation lineup will look like throughout 2027, and revealed several major titles.

The explorable regions shown in the trailer are bigger than anything seen in Rebirth. Cloud can now traverse landscapes more freely, while cinematic boss encounters appear to seamlessly blend real-time action with the series' signature strategic combat. The trailer also features Sephiroth, Zack, Tifa, and Aerith, which makes for an emotional finale.
The most important part of the announcement was probably the release date, since it’s the first time we got one. The game will be out on April 8, 2027, giving JRPG fans a clear date to circle on their calendars.
The trilogy has consistently raised the bar for cinematic role-playing games, and it seems the final instalment will be the biggest one yet, while answering the questions fans of the story have wanted answered for so long.
Until Dawn 2 — A Horror Sequel That Looks Bigger and Deadlier
Until Dawn 2 is coming out more than a decade after the horror classic. It won’t continue the story, but instead plans to introduce an entirely new cast trapped in another terrifying nightmare.
The evolution of the expanded choice system is the biggest improvement the sequel has to offer. Developers revealed that player decisions now create significantly more branching paths, with characters surviving or dying through a wider range of outcomes. Therefore, the gameplay will be less predictable and more replayable.
The game is made for PlayStation 5 alone, and it’s noticeable in the quality of its visual style. Dynamic lighting, highly detailed facial animations, and atmospheric environments create an even stronger sense of tension than the original ever could.
There’s also a release date now, and it’s January 28, 2027, making it one of the first major exclusives of the year. It will be one of the earliest releases of the year and probably the best narrative-driven horror game we've had in years.
Metro 2039 — The Darkest Post-Apocalyptic Shooter Yet
The Metro series has managed to create some of the most impressive worlds filled with harsh environments and oppressive circumstances. The latest installment will continue with this tradition. The gameplay presentation shown during the State of Play shows the game returning to Moscow, but expanding the adventure beyond the tunnels.
The gameplay trailer mostly focused on atmosphere, which is the game’s strongest suit. Players quietly navigated abandoned stations, scavenged for precious resources, and relied on stealth to avoid overwhelming enemy encounters. Survival mechanics and crafting are more sophisticated now, and the AI has improved.
Visually, Metro 2039 is very impressive. It features dense environmental detail, realistic weather effects, and exceptional lighting. The game hasn’t become an action shooter. Instead, it features immersive survival gameplay where ammunition and supplies remain genuinely valuable.
Metro 2039 will come out on February 4, 2027, placing it just weeks after Until Dawn 2. It will be a very crowded lineup. For those who prioritize storytelling, world-building, and tension, Metro 2039 will be the first one to try.
Maneater 2 — The Most Unexpected Sequel of the Show
One of the biggest surprises on our list is Maneater 2, a shark RPG that became a cult favorite in 2020. The sequel follows in the same footsteps, but it’s bigger in every way.
The new setting revolves around a sprawling coastal resort and seaside theme park, giving players a much more varied environment filled with beaches, aquariums, marinas, and underwater attractions. The focus is now more on exploration than it ever was before. Optional quests will reward curious players and those who are ready to engage with the game more deeply.
Maneater 2 is also the only game on our list that has a multiplayer mode. The trailer featured Art Deco architecture, smoky clubs, and orchestral music that created a unique atmosphere rarely explored in modern action games. It was also accompanied by a jazz score that was very well chosen.
The protagonist wields supernatural abilities alongside fast melee combat, combining elegant swordplay with magical attacks in fluid real-time battles.
We don’t know much about the narrative of the game itself. It seems that it will be a mixture of detective noir, fantasy, and high-speed action. In recent years, there have been very few original games, and the industry has felt somewhat stuck. It seems that Rhapsody in Scarlet will be a completely unique game, with little to compare it to. Studios should be encouraged to take such risks as it’s the best way to make creative progress.
If Rhapsody in Scarlet can match the confidence shown in its debut trailer with equally polished gameplay, it could easily become one of 2027's breakout hits.
