The DOOM Prevails precon brings together some of the most dangerous Villains in the Marvel universe, but there is only one character who truly deserves to lead them: Doctor Doom.
While Loki, God of Stories offers another interesting direction for the deck, this upgrade is entirely focused on Doctor Doom and his discard-based strategy. Rather than leaning into attacking, suspend counters, or playing cards from exile, we are going to push the deck much deeper into its discard engine.
This upgrade was built on an approximately $65 budget, focusing on the most impactful and efficient additions for the strategy. However, I’ve also included a few higher-budget upgrade options at the end for players who want to push the deck even further with more expensive powerhouse cards.
Doctor Doom rewards you for carefully planning which cards you discard and turning what would normally be a downside into a source of card advantage, removal, recursion, and additional power. With the right support, discarding a card is not losing a resource, it is simply moving it somewhere more useful.
How to Upgrade DOOM Prevails
DOOM Prevails has several different ideas competing for space right out of the box. There are cards focused on suspend counters, Villain typal synergies, attacking, exile, and repeatedly casting your commander.
For this upgrade, we are going to give the deck a much more focused game plan.
The goal is to discard cards as often as possible and make sure nearly every discard provides an additional benefit. We are adding cards that weaken opposing creatures, strengthen our Villains, refill our hand, and allow us to play cards directly from the graveyard.
Unlike Avengers Assemble, this deck does not necessarily want to win by charging directly into combat. Doctor Doom should be winning from the shadows, building an engine while your opponents slowly realize that every card you discard is making your board stronger.
10 Cards to Cut From DOOM Prevails
Damocles Base, Sword of Kang - Damocles Base is a situational Vehicle that could be fun in the right deck, but it is not necessary for the playstyle we are building. This deck does not want to spend creatures crewing Vehicles when they could be supporting the discard engine instead.
Endless Ranks of HYDRA - This is a fun and flavorful card that can maintain a steady flow of Villains, but ideally, we are not going to be recasting Doctor Doom enough times to make it worthwhile. If everything is going according to plan, Doom should remain safely in control of the battlefield.
Kang Prime - Kang Prime is a decent card, but suspend counters feel like a random secondary playstyle in this deck. We are trying to make the strategy more consistent, and waiting for suspended cards does not directly support the discard engine.
Kang, Temporal Tyrant - Kang, Temporal Tyrant is another decent Villain, but his spot can be filled by a stronger card that more directly supports our primary strategy. Being an uncommon Kang is not enough to protect him from Doctor Doom’s cuts.
Madame Hydra - Creating 2/1 Villain tokens can provide extra bodies, but they are not especially threatening. This slot can be replaced with a Villain that produces more meaningful value whenever we discard.
Mountain - We can do better with the mana base. Removing a basic Mountain gives us room for a utility land that can still produce the colors we need while contributing directly to the deck’s discard strategy.
Progenitor’s Icon - The deck already has enough mana fixing, and giving Villains flash is not going to be especially important. We are not trying to surprise opponents with creatures during their turns. We would rather use this slot on another discard payoff.
Superior Foes of Spider-Man - Superior Foes of Spider-Man is a flavorful inclusion, but playing cards from exile is not the direction I am taking this upgrade. We want our cards going into the graveyard, where they can be recurred or played through Mayhem.
Syphon Mind - Syphon Mind is usually solid Commander card advantage, but there are better draw options for this deck. Making our opponents discard is also not what Doctor Doom’s strategy wants or needs. We should be the ones discarding cards and receiving the benefits.
Titania, Proud Pummeler - Titania is a decent attacker, but this deck does not really want to win through normal combat. Doctor Doom should be operating from the shadows, using carefully constructed engines and Villainous plans rather than simply attacking with a large creature.
10 Cards to Add to DOOM Prevails
These additions push the deck further into discard, giving you more ways to benefit from every card that leaves your hand. Some weaken your opponents, some refill your resources, and others allow you to play the cards you discarded as though you never lost them in the first place.
Archfiend of Ifnir - Giving every creature your opponents control a -1/-1 counter whenever you cycle or discard a card is incredibly strong. You are already planning to discard constantly, so Archfiend of Ifnir can slowly weaken opposing boards or completely wipe out smaller creatures without requiring a traditional board wipe.
Captain Howler, Sea Scourge - Honestly, I have just wanted another excuse to use Captain Howler, but he fits perfectly in this deck. Giving a creature +2/+0 for each card you discard can create an enormous attacker out of nowhere. If that creature dies, you also draw a card, making the risk much easier to accept.
Doctor Octopus, Master Planner - Doctor Octopus is an incredible addition to the deck. He gives your other Villains +2/+2, increases your maximum hand size to eight, and refills your hand to eight cards at the beginning of each end step. With Doctor Octopus in play, discarding cards will rarely feel like a negative because your hand will immediately fill back up.
Green Goblin, Nemesis - Green Goblin is an excellent engine card that rewards you regardless of what you discard. Whether you discard a land or a nonland card, you receive an additional benefit. That versatility makes him one of the most reliable discard payoffs in the deck.
Hobgoblin, Mantled Marauder - Hobgoblin is a strong attacker with abilities that directly reward the deck for discarding cards. While attacking is not our primary plan, the discard engine can turn Hobgoblin into a serious threat that your opponents cannot afford to ignore.
Leader, Super Genius - Leader provides card draw while also giving the deck another way to connive. Connive is perfect here because it allows you to draw cards, discard cards, and potentially strengthen a creature all at once. Every part of that ability helps advance Doctor Doom’s game plan.
Norman Osborn // Green Goblin - Norman Osborn helps make discarding an entirely positive effect by giving cards in your graveyard Mayhem. Instead of losing access to the cards you discard, you can cast them directly from the graveyard. This gives the deck another powerful way to turn the graveyard into an extension of your hand.
Behold the Sinister Six! - Since we are going to be discarding creatures throughout the game, the deck needs strong recursion. Behold the Sinister Six! can return up to six creature cards from your graveyard, allowing you to bring back an entire team of Villains after filling the graveyard.
Cool but Rude - Cool but Rude gives the deck a discard outlet, card draw, and an additional discard payoff inside a single Class enchantment. Once it reaches Level 3, it essentially becomes a Gamble-style tutor, allowing you to search for the cards you need while continuing to fuel the discard engine.
Oscorp Industries - Oscorp Industries is an awesome land for this deck. It provides access to all three of your Grixis colors, and because it has Mayhem, discarding it is not a problem. You can simply play it from your graveyard, turning what would normally be a lost land drop into additional value.

Higher-Budget Upgrades for DOOM Prevails
If you have a larger budget than the ~$65 core upgrade, these cards take the discard engine to an even more explosive level.
Bone Miser - Bone Miser may be one of the best discard payoffs available for this strategy.
Whenever you discard a creature card, you create a Zombie. Discarding a land gives you mana, while discarding a noncreature, nonland card allows you to draw another card. No matter what type of card you discard, Bone Miser finds a way to reward you for it.
It is exactly what this deck wants, but its price places it outside the core upgrade package.
Monument to Endurance - Monument to Endurance is another powerful payoff that rewards you for discarding different types of cards.
Because this deck contains a healthy mix of lands, creatures, and noncreature spells, Monument to Endurance can provide several different benefits throughout the game. It turns your discard effects into a flexible engine and gives you even more value for doing what Doctor Doom already wants to do.
Gameplay Tips for DOOM Prevails After the Upgrades
After the upgrades, you should be discarding cards whenever you have the opportunity. The deck is built to transform discard effects into card advantage, creature removal, combat buffs, mana, and access to cards in your graveyard.
The most important part of piloting the deck is making sure you establish your engine before discarding too aggressively. Cards like Green Goblin, Nemesis, Archfiend of Ifnir, Bone Miser, and Captain Howler give you additional value whenever you discard, so playing one or more of them first can turn an ordinary discard effect into a massive advantage.
You should also pay attention to exactly what type of card you are discarding. Green Goblin and Bone Miser provide different rewards depending on whether you discard a land, creature, or another type of spell. Choosing the correct card can give you the mana, card draw, token, or removal effect you need at that moment.
Cards with Mayhem are some of the safest options to discard because you can still cast them from your graveyard. Norman Osborn // Green Goblin and Oscorp Industries make the graveyard feel like an extension of your hand, allowing you to continue using resources that would normally be lost.
This deck does not need to attack constantly. Let your opponents fight among themselves while you assemble your engine and plan several turns ahead. When you do attack, use discard-based buffs from cards like Captain Howler and Hobgoblin to make those attacks count.
Use your cunning Villains to be evil, plan your attacks carefully, and make every discard part of Doctor Doom’s master plan.
Final Thoughts
DOOM Prevails has plenty of powerful Villains, but the original deck spreads itself across several different strategies. By removing the suspend, exile, Vehicle, and combat-focused cards, the upgraded version can concentrate on what Doctor Doom does best: creating an elaborate plan and turning every apparent setback into an advantage.
The upgraded deck wants to discard constantly, fill the graveyard, and build an engine that makes every discarded card more valuable than it was in your hand. Archfiend of Ifnir weakens opposing armies, Doctor Octopus refills your resources, Green Goblin provides additional discard payoffs, and Norman Osborn allows you to cast the cards you discarded.
Doctor Doom does not need to rush into battle himself. He can remain safely behind his growing army of Villains while his carefully constructed engine takes control of the game.
After all, Doom does not simply defeat his opponents. Doom ensures that their defeat was inevitable from the beginning.
