Some breaking news came to us today, ahead of Ubisoft Forward this Sunday (July 12th). Through a leaked pre-order screen on the PlayStation Network in Hong Kong, we got a bit of a tease for the newest entry to the Far Cry series. The newest game will be called Far Cry 6, and will take place in the fictional Latin country of Yara. Players will take on the mantle of the protagonist, Dani Rojas. It hasn’t been uncovered what Dani’s gender is at this point. Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, reinvented the formula by letting you play as either male or female. Going by that, and being that Dani is a pretty unisex name, you’ll most likely get to choose your gender as well.
As tradition for the Far Cry series, its stories are always based around extremely interesting villains. This time its antagonist, Anton Castillo, is modeled and voiced by Giancarlo Esposito (known for his role as Gus Fring in Breaking Bad and Moff Gideon in The Mandolorian). Castillo is the vicious dictator of Yara, who has plans for his son to follow in his footsteps. Not much has been said about his son, but there are already theories online saying that his son is a young Vaas. If you remember Far Cry 3, you’ll remember Vaas as the psychotic, murderous pirate who always reminded us what the definition of insanity was. If that’s the case, this new game could be a prequel of sorts for FC3.
Ubisoft took the “leaking” of the news rather well, responding from the Far Cry twitter “Anton would not be pleased. See you on Sunday @UbiForward”. I’m sure for them this is a bummer, as Giancarlo Esposito has done a lot of amazing work as villains. This likely would’ve been planned as a big reveal for them on Sunday. It is nice that they’re taking it as it is and letting it roll off of their shoulders. Sunday is expected to be a very big day for Ubisoft regarding the new Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, the ever so quiet Watch Dogs: Legion, and now Far Cry 6. I for one, am very excited to see what else there is for Ubisoft to unveil for us.
Ubisoft Forward will begin streaming online at 3:00pm EST.
As a side note, Ubisoft is giving away a free download of Watch Dogs 2 if you go over to their website and follow their instructions.
