Gotta Go Fast to Your Deck: Sonic the Hedgehog Speeds into Magic: The Gathering

As someone who grew up spinning through Green Hill Zone and choosing Sonic over Mario more times than I can count, this is a crossover that hits me right in the heart—and the mana pool.

Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast have officially announced a Secret Lair x Sonic the Hedgehog collaboration, bringing the blue blur and his crew into the world of Magic: The Gathering. Three unique Secret Lair drops—Friends & Foes, Chasing Adventure, and Turbo Gear—will blast into action starting July 14th at 9 a.m. PT, I don’t know what deck I’m going to put these in, but they’ll land somewhere.

Secret Lair x Sonic: Friends & Foes

The friends & foes set brings the Sonic characters you know and love to MTG with brand new fully original cards showcasing characters like:

  • Sonic the Hedgehog

  • Mike “Tails” Prower

  • Knuckles the Echidna

  • Amy Rose

  • Shadow the Hedgehog

  • Dr. Eggman

  • Super State (Golden Sonic Enchantment)

What better characters to showcase? I also wish that they would add a secondary Eggman card using Jim Carrey’s likeness but that’s just because I love Jim Carrey.

Secret Lair x Sonic: Chasing Adventure

Looking to add some chaos emerald energy to your spells? This drop puts a Sonic spin on iconic MTG staples like:

  • Sol Ring

  • Generous Gift

  • Deadly Dispute

  • Fabricate

  • Open the Armory

  • Unexpected Windfall

  • And a delightful Treasure Token!

In my opinion, reskins of Magic staples are never a bad thing.

Secret Lair x Sonic: Turbo Gear

This is the gear drop you didn’t know you needed. These legendary artifacts are re-skinned as iconic Sonic items—like:

  • Knuckles Gloves (The Reaver Cleaver)

  • Power Sneakers (Lightning Greaves)

  • Piko Piko Hammer (Hammer of Nazhan)

  • Egg Hammer (Myr Battlesphere)

  • Air Shoes (Swiftfoot Boots)

  • An Egg Pawn token (Myr Token)

And my personal favorite, Tornado, Sonic’s Biplane (Weatherlight)

Releasing right after the Final Fantasy set, why not bring back these equipment cards?

Where and When

The Friends & Foes drop will be available in non-foil ($39.99) and foil ($49.99) editions, and the other two will be available in non-foil ($29.99) and foil ($39.99) exclusively at MagicSecretLair.com starting July 14th at 9 a.m. PT, while supplies last. And yes, these will go fast wink wink.
