How to Beat Moss Mother in Hollow Knight: Silksong

The first boss you’ll fight in Hollow Knight: Silksong is Moss Mother, a bigger version of the tiny moss creatures you see flying around the underground cave Hornet falls into early in the adventure. She looks intimidating, but she’s pretty easy to beat. You’ll just need to spend some time jumping around her to avoid getting hit. Here’s how to beat this introductory boss.

How to beat Moss Mother in Hollow Knight: Silksong

When the fight starts, the Moss Mother will start charging its stinger at you. Whichever direction she charges, jump over her when she gets close to you and strike her with your needle before she flies too high for you to reach.

The only time you get to attack is when she’s ground level with you and not trying to sting you. There’s no way to jump high enough to hit her midair.

Hit Moss Mother a few times and she’ll start dropping rocks on you. The origin of these falling rocks changes every time Moss Mother triggers them, so you need to be extra careful. The rocks fall from where the light shines. Wherever the lights shine, stand between the light beams to avoid getting hit.

In addition to rocks, Moss Mother will drop a couple of moss babies later on in the fight. You could kill them with the needle if you want, but because Moss Mother will charge at you immediately after the babies drop down, your best bet is to either kill one of them and jump over the other, or wait for the falling rocks to kill one of them. Once you defeat Moss Mother, any moss babies left alive will die along with her and turn into nothing but bones.

Despite a lot of moving parts in this boss fight, Moss Mother is still easy to beat if you time your attacks correctly. There are tougher fights ahead, though, such as the Bell Beast and Skull Ant boss.
